These are associations the community holds, not settled fact — the more a reading is shared, the bolder it sits.

Core lore

After the full moon the lit portion begins to shrink, and for about seven and a half days it is still more than half — the waning gibbous. Its timing runs opposite to the waxing gibbous: it rises after sunset, later each night, and is most obvious in the morning sky, hanging pale in the west while people are on their way to work. The illuminated edge has swapped sides from where it was a fortnight earlier.

This is the disseminating phase in older lunar terminology, and the word is apt. The cycle has produced whatever it was going to produce, and what happens now is distribution: telling people, sharing out, teaching, handing on. Waning phases carry the general rule of decrease, and this is its gentle end — loosening rather than cutting.

Practitioners use it for thanks, for paying things back, and for the first honest loosening of a grip on something that will need releasing properly a week later. Nothing is banished here. Things are put down carefully so that they can be let go of cleanly.

How the community carries it

Readings practitioners have offered, ordered by how many recognise them. Take what serves, leave the rest.

  • Carried forward

    Common in contemporary practice

Debts settled and thanks written while the moon is still bright enough to see by. The framing most people use is that you cannot let go of something you have not first accounted for.

Credit what you carry. Much of this comes from living traditions, and some of it from traditions that are closed — held by particular peoples and not offered for general use. Where you know whose practice a reading came from, name them; where you don't, say that too.
